The journey of motherhood is fraught with highs and lows, from moments of overwhelming joy to periods of intense stress and exhaustion. As mums navigate the demands of caregiving, career, and personal growth, emotions can become suppressed, leading to feelings of overwhelm and burnout. How often do you hold tears back? Repressive coping, the act of suppressing difficult feelings, has been linked to various health ailments, underscoring the importance of embracing emotional release through tears.

 

Understanding the Tears We Shed

Tears come in different forms, each serving a distinct purpose. While reflex and continuous tears primarily safeguard our eye health, emotional tears emerge as a profound expression of our innermost emotions. Beyond their physiological composition, emotional tears flush out stress hormones (chemical messengers that play a vital role in the body’s response to stress) and toxins, offering a therapeutic release. Oxytocin and endorphins, released in the body during crying, further contribute to emotional and physical pain relief, reaffirming the healing potential of tears.
